While most 14-year-olds prepare to enter their first year of high school, Curtis Lawrence III is starting his freshman year at George Washington University. The impressive teenager is the youngest full-time student in the history of GWU and credits his mom's support as the key factor in his educational success.
Pursuing Academic Excellence from a Young Age
Curtis' mother, a teacher, began working with the youngster at the tender age of two, teaching him math problems and reading skills. He spent his first through third-grade years at a black school for gifted youth in Harlem, before his family relocated to Texas. He jumped his fourth-grade year and began as a fifth-grade student at Idea Carver Academy during his stay there. Curtis Lawrence later went on to skip further grades, before his mother began homeschooling him as an eighth-grader. Qualified for GWU Due to High Grades
Curtis enrolled in the GWU Early College program as a sophomore, where he earned his associate of arts degree alongside his high school diploma. 15 of his peers achieved the same feat, though at just 14 years of age, Curtis was the youngest of the bunch. By completing his exams and keeping a grade point average above 3.0, he was eligible to apply for admission to George Washington University as a full-time student.
Now in his freshman year, Curtis has had no problem completing the coursework assigned to him. The teenager studies geology, calculus, astronomy and university writing. After initially surprising his fellow students with his young age, Curtis now attends regular study groups with his peers and says he has enjoys the rigors of university studies.
