13-Year-Old Tiger Dies At Busch Gardens After Sustaining 'Major Injury'

Animal lovers everywhere are grieving the loss of a prized tiger that was living in Tampa at the Busch Gardens theme park.

Bala and Bhutan are two sibling Bengal tigers that lived together at Busch Gardens. The beloved tigers were a famous fixture of the park, thrilling visitors from all over the world. Unfortunately, the two tigers had a fight recently which led to Bala sustaining a severe injury which eventually led to her tragic passing.

The theme park took to social media on October 29 to announce the tragic passing of Bala.

"We are saddened to share the loss of Bala, a 13-year old Bengal tiger. Bala has lived with her brother Bhutan at the park since 2007, receiving world-class care," they wrote. "Known for her unique coloring, Bala was loved by her care team and the guests who visited Jungala. She will be dearly missed."

The post sparked curiosity amongst followers, who then posted many questions in the comment section of the post. In response, the park posted more details about the altercation that led to Balas's tragic death. 

“Bala incurred a major injury from an atypical interaction with her brother and was transported to the park’s Animal Care Center for emergency care,” they wrote. “Despite the veterinarians’ best efforts, her wounds were too great and she was humanely euthanized. A full necropsy is underway and the team will know more about her passing once test results have been received.”

The park then added that although this particular thing has never happened before under their watch, it isn't unusual for mammals to fight. 

“Disputes between tigers competing for breeding or hunting grounds are common, especially with human activity depleting their native habitats,” the park wrote.e. “This situation is the first occurrence of a fatal injury between tigers in the park’s history.”
