Keane was off the coast of Encinitas, which is in San Diego County, California, diving for lobsters, when he was attacked by a 10-foot shark. The attack caused the young boy to undergo five hours of surgery, where the doctors had to repair parts of his face, torso, upper back, and shoulders. It took over 1,000 stitches.
Keane said he remembered seeing something off in the water and thinking it was a big fish, and then, seconds later his mind realized that it was a shark. After escaping from the shark's jaws, he managed to make it to a kayak that was nearby.
Chad Hammel, the owner of the kayak recalled that after getting Keane out of the water, he glanced back and saw that the shark was still heading towards them determined not to give up.
Even though Keane has a long road to a full recovery before him, his mother, Ellie said that he is still determined to go lobster diving again. However, she swears that from now on she is going to make sure that he is wrapped tightly in bubble wrap. Who can blame her though after what happened the last time?
Keane has proved to be a brave and tenacious kid, and he has a real zest for life. That along with his fearless attitude will get him far in life, and his story should inspire everyone to pursue their goals, despite their fears, just like young Keane Webre-Hayes.
