The chance to be a hero awaits us at every turn. When we step outside our door, we don’t know where the road will take us.

While most of the time we simply go about the mundane affairs of everyday life, at times, danger strikes when we are least prepared for it. In moments like these, people can make the choice to do something extraordinary, changing the world and saving lives. A teenage boy in Tecumseh, Oklahoma knows this fact all too well.

Braydon Self and his stepdad went into their local Family Dollar store expecting a routine grocery trip. What they found set Braydon on the road to becoming a hero. As Braydon and his stepfather entered the store, they walked right into an armed robbery. As a masked gunman took Braydon’s stepdad hostage, Braydon ran for the back of the store. Hiding in a stockroom, Braydon got his cell phone out and called 911.

Visibly shaken, Braydon told police dispatchers of the situation, warning that the robber was pointing a pistol at his stepdad. Police responded in short order and the gunman ran out the back of the store in an attempted escape.

Still hiding in the stockroom, Braydon heard approaching footsteps, fearful that the brazen criminal was coming to end his life. Thankfully, the footsteps Braydon heard belonged to his stepdad, who was also unharmed in the incident.

Braydon’s quick thinking and survival skills saved more than just his stepdad’s life. Thanks to the 13-year old boy’s actions, police were able to quickly locate the suspect. Speaking with reporters, Tecumseh Police Chief JR Kidney said that the suspect, Trey Harlin-Sumlin, was apprehended at his home.

Chief Kidney said that in addition to the stolen money from the Family Dollar, authorities also found evidence of illegal drug use, counterfeit money, and a stolen car in Harlin-Sumlin’s residence.

Looking back at the incident, Braydon says that he is just happy that no one was harmed in the robbery.
