13-Year-Old Boy Rescues Mom & Siblings With Hours-Long ‘Superhuman’ Swim Through Brutal Ocean Waters

A family holiday along Western Australia’s South West coastline turned into a life-threatening ordeal when strong offshore winds swept a mother and her three children out to sea in Geographe Bay on Jan. 30, 2026. What followed was an extraordinary display of endurance and bravery by a 13-year-old boy whose determination played a crucial role in saving his family members’ lives.

The incident occurred near Quindalup, approximately 250 kilometres south of Perth, when the family was using inflatable paddleboards and a kayak in coastal waters. Unexpected weather conditions quickly pushed them farther offshore, leaving the group to battle rough seas and growing exhaustion. As the situation deteriorated, the teenage boy made the critical decision to attempt to reach shore alone to raise the alarm at about 6:00 pm.

After his kayak began taking on water, the boy entered the ocean and swam several kilometres through choppy conditions, enduring hours in the water. His efforts ultimately allowed emergency services to locate and rescue his mother and two younger siblings, who had drifted a significant distance offshore.

Marine rescue authorities later described the boy’s actions as nothing short of extraordinary. His ability to remain focused under extreme physical strain, combined with his detailed recollection of the family’s equipment, proved invaluable to search teams operating against the clock.

Beyond the dramatic rescue itself, the incident highlighted the unpredictable nature of coastal environments and reinforced the importance of safety measures such as life jackets, preparation, and situational awareness. It also served as a powerful reminder that courage can emerge in the most unexpected moments, even from someone so young.

As reported by ABC, Naturaliste Marine Rescue commander Paul Bresland said the boy’s physical effort was “superhuman” by any standard. He stated:

“He swam in, he reckons, the first two hours with a life jacket on.”

Bresland continued:

“And the brave fella thought he’s not going to make it with a life jacket on, so he ditched it, and he swam the next two hours without a life jacket. I thought, ‘Mate, that is incredible.’”

While the teenager pushed toward shore, his 47-year-old mother remained in the water with her 12-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter. The trio clung to a paddleboard as they drifted approximately 14 kilometres offshore before being located at 8:30 pm. Bresland explained that the mother’s resolve was just as vital to the outcome.

“Physically, she just said, ‘I’m struggling, I can’t,’ but she just said they’re looking her in the eye, and she just kept going and kept them together,” he said, adding, “She's an absolute hero as well. To keep those two children together and not give up is absolutely incredible.”

Once the 13-year-old reached land, he alerted authorities, triggering a coordinated search involving WA Water Police, volunteer marine rescue crews, and Western Australia’s Rescue Helicopter. His detailed description of the kayak and paddleboards accelerated the search.

“Within an hour, we found the kayak,” Bresland confirmed.

South West Police Inspector James Bradley emphasized the importance of safety equipment.

“Thankfully, all three people were wearing life jackets, which contributed to their survival,” he said. The family was rescued by a volunteer marine rescue vessel, assessed by St John WA paramedics, and transported to Busselton Health Campus. Reportedly, all members were later discharged and personally thanked the crews involved.
