“They are continuing their family’s legacy of service,” said FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro.
Last week, 301 firefighters graduated from the New York Fire Department academy of which 13 were children of firefighters who died in the aftermath of 9/11.
The New York Post broke the news of the historic group that just graduated from the academy. Other probationary firefighters included the son of a police officer who was killed on 9/11, as well as two sons whose firefighter fathers died because of illnesses linked to the rescue and subsequent recovery work done at Ground Zero.
Spokesman Jim Long stated that this particular class now has the honor of the most "legacy" members. However, many other sons and daughter of New Your City first responders have joined in the past years.

The daughter and son of Carl Asaro are two of the legacy members. Carl was a part of Midtown's Engine 54/Ladder 4 and left behind six kids when he was killed on 9/11.
Another first responder, Robert Tilearcio Sr., survived the attacks. However, he was diagnosed with brain cancer caused by the attacks years later. After he died, his son Robert Jr., took the FDNY test in order to honor his father.
