12 Young Children Miraculously Survive After Church Bus Rolled Over And Flipped

While it’s not the same for everyone, miracles happen every day. It could be as simple as making it to an appointment despite being late for an hour after the client after you made a cancellation. Or passing your exams even though you felt like you almost failed them. These simple moments – no matter how small – give people a number of reasons to be thankful for in life.

While there are many ways miracles can happen to someone, it brings joy to people hearing about miracles of survival – and rightly so because there’s nothing more important in this world than a life of even a single person. But imagine a story of survival of not just one, two, or three but more than a dozen individuals.

When a bus overturns, one might think that the chances of survival for the people on that ride are slim. But one church bus carrying 16 people that recently figured in an accident proved that wrong.

In December 2022, a bus belonging to the Mount Zion Baptist church overturned in Houston, Texas, after the driver attempted to make a left turn in a neighborhood in Harris county. The bus rolled over first before it landed on the side.

When Sherriff Ed Gonzales of the Harris County Texas Sherriff’s Office (HCSO) in Houston, Texas, tweeted about the unfortunate event in the wee hours of December 12th, preliminary investigations said the bus flipped over at 90 Uvalde.

While finding out about the accident was more than enough to bring worry to other people, it brought even more concern to the loved ones of those involved in the accident as 13 out of 16 who were on the bus were children whose ages were between 1 and 16.

Lt. Simon Cheng of the county’s sheriff’s office told ABC News that no one was seriously injured in the accident.

“We’re thankful that no one was seriously injured,” Cheng said.

HCSO revealed that the driver failed to control the speed of the bus. Cheng, on the other hand, said witnesses claimed that the bus appeared to be overspeeding.

One of the witnesses, Jennifer Guerra, recalled in an interview with Click 2 Houston the first few moments following the accident.

“We just heard a big boom and we got to the balcony, and I called 911. I heard screaming, kids yelling help, help,” Jennifer said.

Jennifer and some other family members were among those who responded to the call for help.

“I had ended up helping a girl. I grabbed her jacket. She had her head open right here and I was trying to apply pressure,” Alicia Guerra said.

“We sat them down and gave them water and basically tried to calm them down. Let them know that everything was going to be okay,” Jennifer remarked.

While there were no signs of intoxication, some parents want the driver to be held accountable.

“There were a lot of young children, that is your priority,” Daniel Byerley told ABC 13. “If you are driving a bus full of children, that’s your priority.”

Meanwhile, Jennifer said she feels happy knowing they survived in God’s hands.

“You know basically trying to keep them calm, but it was like crazy. I’ve never seen anything like that. I’m just happy that they were okay, and they got help and everything was in God’s hands they were okay,” Jennifer said.

What happened to the people on the bus will serve as a great reminder that miracles do happen.
