The debate regarding children and electronic devices is one that has been waged for some time now. And many people who are not in favor of children having access to these devices feel smartphones and other electronic devices are a waste of resources and time

While it is true kids sometimes spend too much time playing games, watching television, and communicating with friends in a language only they can understand, the same can be said for many adults. One young man, Gabe Rongier, recently used his access to technology for the good of another person. And if not for Gabe's effort, a life in a faraway state could have been lost.

Gabe was on Snapchat one evening when he saw a concerning post from a girl he did not know. The two kids had a mutual friend and the young girl mentioned she would not 'be here tomorrow.' Gabe, who is 12 years old and a boy scout, did not like what he saw from the girl. His instincts told him it was time for action.

“I called the suicidal prevention services and it linked me to Officer Chandler,” Gabe told KDKA

Gabe made a call to the suicide prevention center. He says he was connected to Officer Chandler. Officer Chandler works out of the New Saline Police Department in Texas and was able to locate the girl to initiate a wellness check.

Officer Chandler took a moment to give Gabe a call the following day. Gabe recounts Officer Chandler explaining the trip he made to the home of the girl. Officer Chandler told Gabe the girl is now safe and sound.

Police officials were able to locate the girl through the use of geotracking. They were able to locate the girl before any harm came to her.

“I was almost shocked to see it was a true story,” Fred, Gabe’s father, said, according to KDKA. “I didn’t believe it at first, but I had to believe it. It’s really true.”

The proud father also says he never misses a chance to tell his son he is a hero.

Lori, Gabe's mother, is also proud of her son. She says, however, she feels it is just as important that other young people are made aware of the story and take similar action when needed. Gabe has received his share of fanfare online and was honored by the police department of New Saline.

He says the biggest reward is knowing the girl is safe and at home with the people who love her.

Do you consider Gabe's actions heroic? Be sure to send this story to everyone on your friend's list. It just might save a life.
