Women's figure skating is an athletic competition filled with daring moves carried out to musical notes. Watch a 12-year-old skating phenomenon shock the audience and capture a world record all at the same time.

The shocking event happened at the Asian Open Trophy event in Bangkok, Thailand, in August 2018. A 12-year-old figure skater by the name of Alysa Liu leaped into the air, twisting in a tight circle as she flew. When she landed, she had successfully completed a triple axel -- the hardest move in women's figure skating.

This figure skating preteen hails from Richmond, California. At that moment, Alysa joined the ranks of only three other American women to land a triple axel in competition -- Tonya Harding, Kimmie Meissner, and Mirai Nagasu. On top of that, she became the youngest woman in history to make the successful jump in an international figure skating competition.

Her father, Arthur, recalled the deep emotions he felt when she made her successful landing. It was something Alysa had been working on for two months before the competition.

As one commenter on YouTube noted, Alysa is already a natural on the ice, showing maturity well ahead of her age. She has the moves, the expressions and the gestures of someone much older. Her talent is only going to grow.

Take a look at the leap that put Alysa into the record books!
