For those of you who have kids, them throwing a tantrum is never fun to deal with. You won't always be able to stop them since kids can get upset over the smallest things. After a handful of tantrums, you're likely to pick up on a few tricks that will calm them down. They're not always guaranteed to work, but they're still worth a try. For those times when nothing is able to calm your child down, here are several tips which can help the situation.

1. Distract Them

Try to distract them from whatever is upsetting them whether it's their favorite toy or a piece of candy. Focusing their attention on something else can make it easier for you to focus on doing whatever you can to fix the problem.

2. Give Them Space

Your motherly instincts will have you wanting to do what you can to calm them down. It may be better to leave them be and let them wear themselves down.

3. Count To Stop Them

Count to a specific number such as five to force them to calm down. Threaten them with a consequence that will make them want to calm down. If you're at the park, threaten to take them home if the screaming and/or crying doesn't stop.

4. Count Before The Tantrum Starts

A tantrum can often result from forcing a child to abandon an enjoyable activity. To prevent them from having a meltdown, give them a final ten seconds. This way they know to hurry up and finish/enjoy whatever they're in the middle of.

5. Use A Secret Word

Teach your kid a certain word to use when they're starting to get upset about something. This way you can easily identify what's upsetting them and try to fix it. This will save you from the embarrassment of dealing with a tantrum while in public.

6. Bring In The Dog

What kid doesn't love a cuddly or playful dog? If anything is able to calm a child down, it would be a dog wagging its tail while licking their face. Who would be able to stay upset with that cuteness?

7. Sing Or Play Music

Sing a song that you know is their favorite. Play a melody that they love to sing or dance along to. Let it play until the tantrum dies down and they're in a more joyful mood.

8. Be Goofy Or Silly

Make them laugh to calm them down. You could tickle them, make funny faces or talk in silly voices. They'll be too busy laughing to remember what they were having a tantrum over.

9. Have A Happy Place

Have a designated spot where you take them when they need calming down. It should be somewhere quiet with nothing around that can upset them even more.

10. Keep A Calm And Gentle Voice

When having a tantrum, they're likely to be screaming and crying. Yelling at them to calm down will likely result in further screaming. Talk to them calmly in order to get their screaming to stop. Yelling can make them think you're mad or punishing them.

11. Cheer Them Up With A Treat

Try to put them in a better mood with ice cream or a cookie. This should be an occasional trick so they don't start expecting that every tantrum will result in something sweet.
