Jun 29, 2018 by apost team

A superstition is a thought that is not backed by either reasoning or a scientific way of thinking, but you might believe them anyway. These superstitions usually attempt to describe the cause of occurrences in ways that are linked to magic. Although most superstitions aren’t backed by science, you will encounter them if you pay enough attention. Witchcraft is closely related to superstition, and observing and understanding both of these concepts will help you realize that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to certain circumstances.

This list compiles 11 of the most popular superstitions that might actually be wisdom from magic.

1. Salt deters evil spirits.

You may have seen someone try to protect themselves from evil spirits by tossing salt over their back or even making lines of salt. To be historically correct, it must be noted that salt has been generationally used as a tool to ward off evil spirits for thousands of years. Witches in more modern times still use the ingredient effectively.

2. Seeing a black cat is bad luck.

Encountering a black cat is not inherently bad luck. However, it might be a sign that someone is watching or spying on you. Black cats are deeply correlated with witches, and in the middle ages, it was believed that black cats were witches transformed into felines sneaking around.

3. Tossing coins into a fountain is good luck.

Water can be home to many spirits, and by tossing coins into a wishing well we are giving them an offering and asking them to aid us in some way. Witchcraft has strong beliefs about nature and the presence of spirits lying within bodies of water.

4. Cover your mirrors at bedtime.

It is hypothesized by some that when we fall asleep, we enter astral projection. If this happens and we see our own reflection, it will toss our spirit back into our body, breaking this projection. Covering your mirrors before bed ensures that the gateway to other planes stays open.

5. Four-leaf clovers are lucky.

One of the most talked about superstitions is believing in the luck of four-leaf clovers. These clovers are known to be a very prominent object used in witchcraft for creating spells, which is what makes them so lucky.

6. Garlic deters evil.

We’ve heard about garlic deterring vampires, but it also is known to rid us of evil. Witches use garlic in many spells and rituals which can help us escape negative karma and excuse ourselves from poor luck. The potency of this ingredient is what makes it so important.

7. You can wish on dandelions.

Witches also use dandelions in rituals and spells and have for a long time. These plants enhance psychic abilities and have healing qualities. Wishing on a dandelion won’t necessarily bring you everything you need, but there is more than meets the eye when it comes to these common plants.

8. Knocking on wood to prevent bad events.

Knocking on wood after saying something we wish to not happen is something we all grew up believing in. The backstory of this superstition is that trees, and therefore wood, harbor spirits that we can call upon to help us. Knocking on wood is also believed to ward off the evil spirits who want to hurt us.

9. The number 13 is bad luck.

Many people are so superstitious that they hate anything containing this number, and it has been avoided from generation to generation. Even building managers avoid labeling a floor as the 13th. People dislike this number because it disrupts a perfect balance in their lives. It is rumored that many covens of witches had 13 members.

10. Wear your birthstone for good luck.

Witches have strong feelings about the power of nature as well as the importance of stones. Because our birthstone highly relates to our lives, we definitely increase our luck when we wear jewelry containing it. This might sound foolish to you, but manifestation rituals swear by the use of birthstones.

11. Breaking a mirror is worth bad luck for seven years.

Ancient Romans have a belief that peering into a mirror is like peering into your own soul, and therefore breaking the mirror does damage to your soul. Their culture's high respect for the number seven is the reason for the phrase "seven years of bad luck."

Some of these superstitions have been called foolish and unwise. But when we understand the background of these beliefs and the rituals behind them, we may have more respect for them. What superstitions do you believe in?
