101-Year-Old Woman Remains Active In Her Job & Gives Advice For Long Life

People are always fascinated whenever they find out that a person is already 100 years old or even a few years older than that, as they have been through a lot of hardships and witnessed numerous momentous events throughout their lifetime.

This was the case of a woman named Jayne Burns, who turned 101 years old in July 2023, and it appears that she had no plans on retiring soon as she still works and even drives to her job.

According to a report published by Today in August 2023, Burns was still active at the time as she had been working for 25 years as a part-time fabric cutter at a Joann store in Mason, Ohio.

Born in 1922, the sweet elderly woman said she liked being active and working with other people. “I really don’t notice that I’m any older,” she said.

Aside from working at her age, Burns is also independent as she drives a car to work and sometimes commutes for 20 minutes in order to reach her workplace.

Unlike other working people, presumably because of her age, the old woman only works for three days a week, but it depends on her schedule; her usual time at the store is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Despite her age, Burns is doing well at her job as she still has good eyesight and can still lift fabrics, except for heavy vinyl ones. Her only problem is arthritis in her hands and knees.

Her daughter, who also worked at the same store, was the one who introduced her mother to the manager in 1990. Since she was into fabric, she took the job after it was offered to her, and she's liked it ever since.

In a fun TikTok video posted in 2022 to celebrate Burns’ 100th birthday, she said that her favorite memory over the past century was her children.

Regarding her secret to longevity, she jokingly said in the clip that the fountain of youth is located in St. Augustine, Florida.

Even though many would assume that living a long life has something to do with genes, the sweet elderly woman has a completely different case, as her mother passed away in her 40s due to an aneurysm while her father died at the age of 65.

In an interview with Today, Burns said she doesn’t know why she's lived a long life. However, she still shared some of the routines she had been doing for decades, and surprisingly, it’s very relatable to some people.

Burns told the outlet that she still eats whatever she wants even though it’s unhealthy, like bacon, butter, meat, and even sweets. However, she consumes everything in moderation.

The most important thing in her life is staying active as she said, “I was always active all my life doing things. So I think that has helped more than anything.” She added, “You’ve got to keep moving and not sit around the house all day,”

In addition, she also follows a skincare routine as she uses a moisturizer and puts on makeup on a regular basis.

Lastly, her best advice for living a long life is to be surrounded by a lot of people as she herself made friends at work, including the young woman who featured her in a TikTok video.

“It’s important to find people who are friendly and kind,” she told CNBC.

She also credited working at her age as being helpful in her longevity, “Staying busy keeps you from focusing on your aches and pains.”
