100 Hospital Employees Line Halls For A Heartwarming Tribute To Nurse

If you've ever been to Erie, Pennsylvania, you may have noticed three lights lit up on top of the building at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Hamot Hospital. Maybe you even know what they meant: these lights are lit up when an organ donation or transplant is in process.

On June 3rd, 2019, the lights lit up to pay tribute to one of the hospital's own. One of the nurses, Mary Desin, passed away at 58 after a brain aneurysm.

Desin was a devoted worker and devoted 39 years of her life to the saving of others. And that didn’t stop when her life ended, either. She made sure she would be able to save lives after death by donating her organs.

As a clear sign of how much she and her tireless efforts had meant to the hospital staff, one of Desin’s colleagues posted a heartfelt message on their Facebook newsfeed, along with a photo of the hospital.

The post went viral and soon ABC’s Good Morning America asked the family to join them and talk about the touching tribute. Matthew James, Desin’s son, recalls just how emotional it was.

“Most everybody was crying. People I didn’t even know came up to me during the time and said how much they loved her and she helped them get further in their career,” he told Good Morning America.

He was blown away by the number of people that were there. It showed him just how many people she had impacted throughout her short time on earth. He was expecting to see around 20 people, not more than 100!

Her touching obituary emphazised how much she loved people, but other creatures as well:

"She was an animal lover, especially of dogs. Mary was generous to a fault, always helping anyone that crossed her path. She loved that her job as a nurse allowed her to help anyone and everyone she could."

Her husband passed away 4 years before her but she is survived by three of her children and four grandchildren, to say nothing of the people she helped survive by the organs she donated.

How amazing it is that Desin went on to save lives even after her death? What do you think about organ donation? Be sure and send this to your friends. Maybe someone will decide to donate just because you sent them this story to read!
