Jayla Dallis is a ten-year-old who is being called a hero for her role in saving the life of her younger sister, Kali, WSB-TV reports.

The day was May 15 and three-year-old Kali joined her sister in the swimming pool at the Savoy Apartments in their hometown of Chamblee, Georgia. The toddler used a green innertube to play in the shallow end of the pool. The innertube capsized and suddenly the toddler was upside down with her head beneath the water.

Kali struggled to get her head above the water and became detached from the inner tube. She could not swim and made an unsuccessful attempt at treading water.

Jayla was not in the water when she turned to see her sister struggling. She jumped in the pool and was able to pull her sister from the water. The three-year-old was already unconscious. Jayla says it was difficult to pull her sister from the pool:

"She was, like heavy, so I had to pull her by her hair, then I grabbed her by her waist and pulled her up," Jayla recalls the incident in an interview with WSAV3.

Once at the side of the pool she pulled her onto the dry ground by her wrist.

The apartment manager was located and a bystander made a call to 911. Kali's aunt and the apartment's operations manager administered CPR to her.

Seargent Ed Lyons received the call and arrived on the scene as quickly as possible. Officer Lyons, who has a six-year-old daughter of his own, continued CPR efforts.

Lyons told local media sources he saw his own daughter when he saw Kali motionless on the ground. He said the young girl was wearing a bathing suit that looked like one his daughter would wear, and they had the same hairstyle too. Officer Lyons says it took a moment for him to shake it off and do his job.

Kali was spitting up water but had not regained consciousness when the ambulance arrived. She was in critical condition when she made it to the hospital. The three-year-old would need two weeks of convalescence time at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta but made a full recovery before her release.

Her mother fought back tears while explaining to media that she understands how fortunate she is to still have Kali with her.
