A teacher in Tennessee is making headlines for inflicting a humiliating punishment on a 10-year-old girl.

It all started when the student, Reagan, came home from school in tears. She had a bleeding lip, and her mother Victoria immediately wanted to know what happened.

According to Reagan, her teacher had gotten annoyed with her for talking too much in class, so she put duct tape over Reagan's mouth.

"Everybody laughed at me," Reagan said through her tears, according to Fox News.

Victoria was incensed. According to a report that she gave a local news station, she knew that her daughter was talkative, but she claimed that it came from a place of loving to learn and wanting to interact with her teachers a lot. Victoria couldn't believe that an educater would actually think that it was appropriate to silence a student with duct tape.

"That messes with you psychologically for life," Victoria fumed, adding that her daughter was "humiliated" by the treatment.

It even put a strain on their mother-daughter relationship.

"As a mother, to protect, it's like... that messed up our trust," Victoria revealed to Fox News. "She felt like I knew about it and I allowed it to happen."

To right the wrong, Victoria took her concerns to the principal and filed a report about the incident. She also contacted the police and the local school board. Metro Nashville Public Schools has informed the media that they're aware of the story, and the Department of Child Services is also investigating.

Another student in Reagan's fifth-grade class has confirmed the incident. However, they've said that it was a joke, and they've defended the teacher from the accusations of taking things too far.

Victoria doesn't agree. She thinks that her daughter is owed a public apology by the teacher.

"I would like for her to make a public statement and a public apology to my daughter," the mama bear revealed.

She's also shared the story with the media in hopes of raising awareness. It's been a relatively successful endeavor; many news stations have covered it, and commenters everywhere are debating whether or not the teacher should be excused for what she did.

To Victoria, however, the bad behavior is clear, and she isn't going to stop until she gets her baby an apology.

"I’m angry, I’m hurt, and I’m driven," she told reporters.

What do you think, readers? Is it okay to put duct tape over a child's mouth as a joke, or should the teacher have to face the music for her decision? Let us know in the comments!
