Child abduction cases are just as common now as they were a decade ago, but to have it happen on your doorstep can be a shock. A ten year old boy was recently faced with an abduction attempt as he walked home and his quick thinking ended up preventing his own abduction. The entire episode was caught on a doorbell security camera, giving parents, neighbors, and police some clues as to what happened and what precautions they need to take.

Ten year old Grayland Dowland walks himself home from basketball practice every week, just a short walk two houses down. But even this extremely short walk proved perilous when there was someone interested in abducting a child on the prowl. As he walked along the sidewalk, two men in a white car approached him, offering candy if he got in the car. Dowland refused their offer and continued on his way.

Grayland says that the men pursued him in their vehicle, continuing to try and coax him into their vehicle. Grayland made the decision to sprint to his home, keeping an eye out for the men in case they got out of their cars to grab them. Once he reached his front door though he found the door was locked and no one was there to let him in immediately.

Because the men began reversing to follow him back to his home, Grayland grabbed the first thing he saw to attempt to defend himself, some rocks, and then ran to the neighbors house away from the vehicle. His neighbors door was open so Grayland let himself in and secured the door behind him. The men in the car could be seen backing up into the driveway across the street and waiting to see if the boy returned outside before driving off.

Grayland's parents are grateful that their son was able to get away but plan on implementing a buddy system in their neighborhood and ensuring that he always has a parent or other adult with him at all times. Neither of the men in the car was apprehended, nor was the car discovered, but police are asking for help in identifying the vehicle that was used and seen in the video.
