10-Year-Old Blows Whistle To Protect Herself From Bullies And It's Catching On
Jun 28, 2020 by apost team
Fifth-grader Giada Oates from Hackensack, New Jersey has started carrying a whistle during school to combat bullies.
The bully she was dealing with wasn't just being mean to her, they were threatening to kill her as well. The New York Post reported that the bully making the threats was a seventh-grader who had grabbed the young girl from behind.
Although some may say that the bully was only joking, these types of threats should be taken seriously to ensure that they do not escalate into a bigger problem. This is especially true when these actions take place at school while students are trying to learn and prepare for their futures. Either way, the situation and threats on her life made the 10-year-old uncomfortable in a place where she should always be able to feel safe.
Giada did her best to keep a brave face and not cry when she was going through the ordeal with her bully but she knew that she had to do something soon to prevent the situation from getting even worse for her. This is when she got an idea that would help keep her safe — she decided to start bringing a whistle to school.

Bringing Attention To A Problem
To solve a problem, it's important to bring attention to it and a whistle is one way to do it. It can be a cry for help that gives people a voice during a scary situation. When people hear a whistle it lets them know that there is someone close that needs a hand.
The Legend of Billie Jean, a movie starring Helen Slater that was released in 1985, was the inspiration behind Giada's smart idea of bringing a whistle with her to school. Billie Jean stood up for herself and others and is seen as a rebel. After Giada starting wearing the whistle, other girls in her school started doing the same thing!
One little girl was able to inspire many others to keep themselves safe while standing up to bullies and she has really made a difference. Many people are unhappy with what schools have done to keep children safe so many parents and students are taking their well-being into their own hands.
Nobody should have to deal with being harassed and threatened when they are just trying to learn and live their lives and action needs to be taken.
A Bittersweet Situation
It's great to see so many children standing up for themselves in creative ways when they are being bullied, but it's sad that the situation is happening in the first place.
Stopping bullying is something that will require help from everyone involved to get to the root cause of the problem and ensure that the bullies and the bullied get the help that they need.
Do you have any kids in your life that should watch Giada's story and consider bringing their own whistle? Pass this along to your loved ones.
