10 Things You Need To Teach Your Children If You Want To Keep Them Safe

We teach our kids several important lessons while they grow up. Showing gratitude, implementing kindness, acknowledging our mistakes are just a few of the teachings we learn. Those are important but teaching kids how to protect themselves is crucial when a child is developing.

We do everything we can to protect our kids from danger. Sometimes we can't be there to pull them out of harm's way. It' important to tell our kids what they should do to keep themselves saved. Here are just a few things you can teach your children.

1. Don't Talk To Strangers

Strangers can be strange and scary people, to say the least. Only trust people you know. If you're going out in public, make sure to remind your child not to talk to anyone unfamiliar. Even if they're the nice neighbor down the street, always tell your child to call for you if the neighbor tries luring them.

2. Saying No

Saying no can be difficult for people of all ages, not just adults. Teaching kids early on how to utilize their voice is important. If your child feels unsafe or uncomfortable they have every right to say no to the situation. Make sure to reiterate the notion that the child can say no to an adult.

Emergency phone numbers should be taught to kids as soon as they can recognize the importance of them. Learning the number to the police station, fire station, and hospital are easy numbers to teach kids. Tell them what each station is for and when to call them.

4. Safe Word

Come up with a unique safe word between you and your child. Try to avoid common words in order to prevent any confusion. This is perfect for a situation that requires someone else to take your child somewhere. Have the child ask the stranger what the passcode is. If they correctly answer they know they're safe. If the stranger is confused or guesses incorrectly, have the child leave the situation immediately. You can also use a safe word to make sure your child is safe. By asking them to send the safe ensures you're talking to your kid.

5. Informing

Make sure to have your kids inform you of their whereabouts, especially when they're leaving out. In case worst comes to worst, it's essential to know where your kid is. This will also help you just in case you need to get to them as soon as possible. No matter how old they are, knowing their location is important and comforting.

Don't let your children take things from strangers, even if they know the person. When it comes to harming children, most of the time the children know their abuser or abductor. In order to prevent any terrible circumstances, teach your children to say no to anything a stranger gives them, particularly food.

7. Guardian's Information

It's important to teach your kids your personal information. As their legal guardian, you are the person who needs to be contacted in case of emergency. Teaching your kids your full name, number, and home address is important. Remember to let your children know to only reveal this information in extreme scenarios and preferably to someone trustworthy.

8. Home Alone

If your child is home alone, make sure they know never to open the door for anyone. They should never tell a stranger or anyone other than their legal guardians, they are home alone. If a stranger keeps knocking on the door, tell the child to say the parents can't come to the door at the moment and to leave a message. If the child senses danger, come up with an escape plan in case of a situation. This will ensure the child keeps calm and exits the situation safely.

9. Social Media

Social media can be a great thing but also a dangerous one. It comes in many different forms the most popular ones being Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Anyone can claim to be any age and any gender. It's so easy to lie about who you are. If your child uses social media, make sure they know the dangers of social media and how to protect themselves.

10. Don't Go Alone

Teach your kid to never wander off by themselves. Teach them the importance of sticking together, especially in busy areas. If your child wants to leave out alone, don't let them until a trusted adult can accompany them to their desired location. Even if the child claims they'll meet their friends there, reinforce the importance of sticking together, even for short distances.
