This 'Unadoptable' Shelter Dog Is Named A Hero After Saving Three Girls From A Dangerous Predator

May 18, 2019

No one expected much from Edgar. The four-year-old treeing walker coonhound was labeled as unadoptable by a West Virginia animal shelter.

The Lamberts disagreed. This Pennsylvania family fell in love with the dog and decided he'd be a perfect fit for them. After adopting him, they realized they were right.

Edgar got along well with everyone. He was calm and mild-mannered. He adored the Lamberts' three young children. He was more than happy to spend his days -- most of them snoozing -- with his new family.

He might be lazy, but Edgar has a surprisingly fierce and protective side. The Lamberts found that out one night when a nightmare scenario occurred.

While the family slept, a strange man broke into their house with the intention of kidnapping at least one of the children.

Edgar instantly went on alert. He began barking nonstop, waking up Thom Lambert. When an odd noise came from downstairs, Edgar got even more upset, barking with what Thom described as "pure rage."

Thom's blood went cold. Only a few days before, someone had kidnapped a child, Gemma Moats, in their neighborhood. On the night of the kidnapping, Edgar had acted the same way -- upset, barking, and angry.

Thom ran downstairs to see what had Edgar so upset.

He found every parent's worst nightmare. The door to the kitchen was hanging open. One of the windows was up. Thom knew that no one in the family could be responsible. They'd been extra vigilant since Gemma had been taken from her home in the middle of the night.

Someone had been in their house. Luckily, all of the Lambert children were safe.

Thom immediately called the police. As if sensing that things would be okay, Edgar calmed right down and went to sleep in the middle of the floor.

When the police arrived, they couldn't believe that such a seemingly docile, lazy dog had managed to scare away an intruder. They'd soon confirm that Edgar's heroics truly did save the say.

The man responsible for the crime was 20-year-old, Thomas Dewald. He had kidnapped little Gemma. At just four-years-old, she managed to escape him and was found by a motorist on the side of a road. The smart little girl was able to describe the house where she'd been taken. This led the police right to the kidnapper.

When arrested, Dewald admitted that he'd broken into the Lamberts' house. He claimed to have gotten all the way upstairs where the children were sleeping, but Edgar's furious barking forced him to flee.

The Lamberts were understandably shaken by the events, but they're overjoyed that they made this "unadoptable" dog part of their family.
