Researchers Investigate If Whole Milk Is Actually Better Than Skim Milk

Nov 15, 2018

While it's important to drink milk for strong teeth and bones, you've probably been told that low-fat milk is the best option. For those who enjoy more flavor, there are a few reasons why whole milk could actually be better for you to drink.

Keep in mind that those who are lactose intolerant might not be able to benefit from drinking whole milk like others, but there are options for lactose intolerant people as well that include coconut milk and almond milk.

If you think that skim milk is healthy for you, then you would be wrong. There are no real clarifications as to whether a low-fat diet is truly any healthier for you. 'Dairy Nutrition' examined different studies that prove that there is no direct correlation to preventing heart disease or promoting weight loss by drinking low-fat milk.

Good Fats

There are some fats that are actually good for your body. Some of these fats are found in whole milk. A study conducted by the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center discovered that only high-fat dairy lowered the chance of developing diabetes.

If you've had a glass of skim milk, then you know that it tastes almost like water except with a little flavoring added. Since whole milk has more fats in it, the taste is present whereas skim milk doesn't have the fats that deliver a good taste. This is why many people enjoy a cold glass of whole milk with a meal or with a few treats now and then.

When you cook with skim milk, you don't get the beneficial fats and flavors that you do from whole milk. While there are some recipes that use low-fat milk, most are better when you use whole milk.
