Rescuers Attempt To Get Close To Stray Dog For Months, Then A 6-Year-Old Girl Tries And Succeeds

Aug 28, 2019

Dogs are man's best friend, but sometimes it takes them a while to warm up to people. People who work at animal shelters know this firsthand. It's not always easy to gain a dog's trust, especially if they aren’t used to human interaction. Dogs have complex emotions that people aren’t always able to see on the surface. It takes a special kind of person to “whisper” to a dog. That’s what makes this story so touching.

Daisy the dog had been on the run for a while. She was adopted from a local shelter but then ran away from home. Rescuers had been trying for two and a half months to get close to her. They were able to feed her, but they couldn't come close enough to get her. It seemed like Daisy just didn’t trust people after she ran away.

Then a little girl changed everything. Meghan Topping and her family had been Daisy's foster family before she was adopted and then ran away from home. Hollister Animal Lost and Found Animals contacted Meghan to ask her if she could help get Daisy.

Meghan went with her mom and the dog rescuers to find Daisy. When Meghan approached Daisy, she knew the right thing to do. Take a look at what happens in the video. Meghan got down on Daisy's level and looked into her eyes. Daisy recognized Meghan and instantly trusted her. That's so powerful for a little girl to be able to do that.

The story doesn't end there. The Toppings weren't able to foster the dog at that time, so Daisy went to live with another little girl, Ava. Six hours into their foster shift, they knew that Daisy had found her new forever home.
