The European company that designed the paths came up with the idea to help prevent accidents at night. The Polish bike path design is inspired by one that is located in the Netherlands, but the technology is different. The path in the Netherlands is lighted by LEDs while the Polish trail is lit by solar power.

Engineers created the path out of luminophores that absorb solar energy and glow at night. The energy absorbed in one day can last for up to 10 hours at night. The sunlight provided on a daily basis is enough to keep the trails lit every night. The trails glow brightly because there are no city lights in the vicinity to obscure the light from the paths. The sun-powered trails are great for improving safety when riding at night, and they also provide an energy solution that is friendly for the environment.
