People who serve in the military have to learn how to fall asleep in uncomfortable and stressful circumstances. They also have jobs that require them to be well-rested, awake and alert, meaning that their sleep is extremely important to them. Because they have to think on their feet in dangerous types of situations, thinking clearly after a full night of rest is one of the most vital parts of their job.

Sharon Ackman, an expert in high-performance military strategies, discussed the success rate of this type of sleeping strategy. She describes being able to successfully shut off your mind and body in order to fall asleep in two minutes flat and receive a good nights rest.

She also details how important it is to receive an adequate amount of sleep, stating that your energy levels will be higher, and your mind and body will be able to endure anything that life throws at you. But just what is this sleeping method and how do you use it if you’re not a member of the United States Navy? It only takes four simple steps.

To begin, you must start by relaxing all of the muscles in your face. This includes your tongue, jaw, and all of the muscles that surround your eye sockets. Avoid squinting, frowning and holding any kind of tension in your face.

The second step is to begin focusing on relaxing your shoulders. Allow them to drop. Then, relax the areas around your upper and lower arms. Begin on one side and end with the other.

The third step is simply to breathe. Relax your chest while you take outward breaths. Next, focus on relaxing your legs. Start with the upper thighs, and move down to your lower body.

When these steps have concluded, spend at least ten seconds of your time to clear any unnecessary thought or stress in your brain. You can allow yourself to picture some relaxing images in order to do this step. There are three images that are proven to work.

The first one is to picture yourself resting on a canoe in a lake. Picture the blue sky surrounding you, and feel the serenity of the scene. The second image is to picture yourself in a room that is completely black. Feel yourself resting on a hammock made of velvet.

The third image is to repeatedly tell yourself “don’t think” over and over for ten seconds. You can say this out loud, or in your mind. After this, the steps are complete and you should find yourself sleeping!

Since sleep is so important to our brain function and daily lives, it’s vital to receive an adequate amount each night. If you’re tired of buying products that claim to help you sleep, try this method from the US Navy. What do you think about this sleep method? Are you going to give it a try?
