When a common dog or cat is just not enough, some people are considering adopting a giant snail for their next pet. But you should know that these animals are actually illegal to own in the US.

The Giant Land Snail of Africa has now found its way to the US, delighting some residents and scaring others. The adult-sized version of this species of snail measures approximately seven centimeters (2.8 inches) in height and 20 centimeters (7.9 inches) in length. While the color of the hard shell can vary in hue and is largely dependent on the snail's diet, the most typical color is brown.

The snail was originally found in areas of Kenya and Tanzania. Although you can now found the snail nearly anywhere, it is most common to find them in humid climates such as those found in the state of Florida.

Because of their large size, a typical home garden is not enough food to keep these critters satiated. Instead, they need to feast on larger crops to sustain all of their needs. The snails are so ruthless with their appetites that they have even been known to chow down on the stucco exterior of houses.
