Orphan Elephants Welcome And Comfort The Baby Calf Who Lost His Mother

Nov 30, 2018

Are you looking for a heartwarming story? How about a video of an entire herd of orphaned elephants rushing to comfort an elephant calf who lost his mom?

When an elephant calf was found wandering alone near a river, rescuers knew what they had to do. There was no sign of his mother or herd, and such a young calf was vulnerable to predators and poachers.

The rescuers from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, who were patrolling the area by airplane, took the one-year-old calf to the Nairobi Nursery. They named the calf Mukkoka and nursed him back to health. Little Mukkoka was starving and dehydrated, but he recovered quickly.

When it was time for Mukkoka to join his new herd, something magical happened. Other orphaned elephants surrounded him, welcoming him into their herd with outstretched trunks. It seems these majestic creatures are capable of empathy and compassion.

After making Mukkoka feel comfortable, they led him into the forest of the sanctuary to meet the rest of his new herd. An older female elephant, named Sana Sana, took an interest in Mukkoka and is acting like his surrogate mother. This happens often in the animal kingdom. A mother is a mother, no matter her species.

One-year-old Mukkoka will spend the first ten years of his life at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. He'll eventually be moved to a protected habitat where he can roam freely.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has been rescuing and protecting African wildlife for more than 40 years. If you'd like to donate to this amazing foundation, you can do so here.
