Nine Of The Cheekiest Balcony Moments From Royal Children At Buckingham Palace

Apr 30, 2021

There is nothing better than seeing the royal family, including the children, all dressed in their finest outfits, standing side-by-side on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Having to stand still for so long was sure to bring about some hilarious and adorable moments, and the royal children have been sure to deliver year after year.

There are a number of reasons for the royal family to gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. The most common are weddings, the Trooping the Color parade as well as major jubilees. While rare, royal weddings are also occasions for the newlyweds to present themselves on the balcony. No matter the reason, there is always something to see when the family all gather together.

With the recent celebration of Prince Louis’ third birthday, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to recall the nine most adorable, and cheeky, moments from the royal children on the balcony of Buckingham Palace over the years.

In this photo, you can see young Prince Louis making an adorable scrunched-up face while his mother Kate Middleton holds him. The Prince’s siblings can be seen standing in front of their parents. Princess Charlotte was smiling sweetly while Prince George looked sort of confused by all of the action below the balcony. Children show time and again that they aren't touched by the need to act proper all of the time.

Here we have the hilarious sight of Savannah Phillips, the daughter of Peter and Autumn Phillips, clearly having had enough talking from Prince George. The young Prince looked like he couldn’t contain his laughter even with his cousin’s hand clamped over his mouth. Prince William is looking down at them with a slightly concerned expression, and like all fathers, seemed a little annoyed at the lack of order. It’s hard to get cheekier than this when it comes to the kids.

James Viscount Severn

The son of Prince Edward and Countess Sophie, James, Viscount Severn, can be seen here adorably using his hands as binoculars. The entire family, including James’ sister, Lady Louise Windsor, were part of the annual Trooping the Colour Ceremony on June 15, 2013, in London, England. Trooping the Colour is the event that usually takes place on the second Saturday of June, is a large parade that features over 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians. It is the second celebration of the Queen's birthday, which is actually on April 21.

According to the BBC, the royal tradition of celebrating two birthdays was created during King George II's reign in 1748. Since his birthday was in November, he decided to have a large public celebration in June instead, when he could make use of the great summer weather. It made perfect sense to do so at the time and the royal family has celebrated each ruling monarch's birthday in this way ever since.

In this photo, little Charlotte rested her head on her hands in the sweetest pose as the whole family gathered once again to watch the Trooping of the Colour parade in 2017. It may seem like Charlotte is a little bored, but it may also just be the moment that the photo was caught.

Grace Van Cutsem

Flower girl Grace Van Cutsem looked fed up with the loud cheering after Kate Middleton and Prince William’s wedding in 2011. The young girl had her hands pressed firmly over her ears with a look of annoyance on her face. The image is hilarious and Kate and Prince William were smiling happily regardless of the cheeky flower girl, as it was naturally the most important day of their lives. We wonder what sweet Grace may be thinking now that it has been 10 years since the photo was taken!

Prince William

A young Prince William can be seen in this photo with his head in his hands. The image is hilarious and makes the young Prince look rather dramatic for his age. We wonder what happened that made him have such a funny reaction. His mother was dressed in a gorgeous green and white dress, and she looked on at him lovingly despite his antics. The photo was taken in June of 1988.

Prince Harry

This has to be the cheekiest photo we have ever seen! It was taken the same day in 1988 as the above-mentioned Prince William photo, and he can be seen in the foreground of this picture as well. But the star of this image was Prince Harry, smiling hugely with his tongue sticking all the way out while being held by his mother. While we don't usually see royal children acting so cheeky, we are glad that photos can capture their funny side now and then!

Back in 1990, a very young Princess Beatrice can be seen expressively discussing something with her mother, Sarah Ferguson. We may never know what the discussion was, but it looks like both mom and daughter and fully immersed.

Prince Charles

Prince Charles makes the list this time with this photo of him and his family from 1953. The young man looked so serious as he saluted the crowd from the balcony of Buckingham Palace with his eyes closed. The Queen Mother carried on without noticing but Princess Mary was looking at him questioningly. What an adorable child Charles had been!
