When a dog comes into a home as a puppy, it is often treated as a child, even when it is fully grown. They become members of the family. Most people treat their dogs like slightly spoiled children, showering them with affection, plenty of treats and a lot of play time. Hugo, a 2-year-old French bulldog and Boston terrier mix, is no exception. Nicole Finnegan and her husband adopted Hugo as a pup and treated him like their firstborn.

How Dogs React When a Baby Is Born

Family pets do not always react well when a new baby comes into the home. They might feel jealous because the parents now have to devote most of their time and affection to the new baby. The pets might even get banned from certain parts of a house, such as the place where the baby sleeps. The Finnegans hoped that Hugo would react well when their baby son arrived.

What One Dog Did When He Met His Baby Brother

Nicole gave birth to a son, Max. She made sure that Hugo still got plenty of attention and a lot of praise for good behavior around the baby. She never left the two unsupervised. One day, Max was enjoying some play time on the floor. Hugo reached his paw out and held hands with Max. The hand holding lasted for a few seconds. Nicole managed to capture this on her smartphone and uploaded it onto her social media.

Hugo did not want to let go of his little brother. He kept reaching out his paw to the baby's hand. It is clear that the two will make a good pair of brothers in the future. Nicole was tickled about this cute interaction between her dog and her son. Positive reinforcement and constant supervision ensure that babies and pets can have safe interactions. Research has shown that children who are raised in a home with pets are healthier and more empathetic than kids who are raised in a home without any pets. The video goes on to show Hugo giving Max a few doggy kisses as Max laughs.
