Mom Goes To Hospital With Back Pain Only To Discover There's A Full-Grown Baby Behind Her Ribs

May 14, 2021

A woman in Michigan got the surprise of a lifetime after going to the hospital in June 2018. Kelly Yakich went to the hospital because she was experiencing back pain, but she was not prepared to find the cause behind the severe pain she was feeling. The then 41-year-old was a mother of three at the time, and unbeknownst to her, she was soon to become a mother of four.

Most women typically take extra precautions while pregnant, like watching what they eat or drink. They have certain safety measures they need to follow to ensure that they and their future baby stay healthy. It’s not uncommon for a woman to gain weight and have a growing belly during this nine-month period, although the change in appearance varies from person to person.

This is also a time to celebrate a new addition to the family, and most women have baby showers with their friends and family. Picking out a name is also something fun for the parents to figure out.

There are a lot of unknowns that come with pregnancy, like when exactly you’ll give birth. Surprisingly, other women have been through similar experiences when they were also unaware that they were expecting a baby. While each situation is different, it’s remarkable that so many women have been able to relate to Kelly and her unusual pregnancy.

For this mom in Michigan, the day her fourth child was born came as a surprise — not only because she didn’t know it was happening that day, but because she didn’t even know she was pregnant!

It was a typical Monday in June 2018 until Kelly realized that she needed to go to the hospital since she was not feeling very well. A mere one hour later, she was the mother to her fourth child, a newborn baby boy. Kelly was completely unaware that she was even pregnant. Thankfully, the mother and son both left the hospital happy and healthy, according to WNEM.

“We had nothing to do this weekend,” Kelly’s husband John Yakich said. “We were making other plans and life made other plans for us.” That new plan resulted in the birth of Gunnar Jaxson Yakich, a beautiful baby boy.

Even though she knew she needed medical attention, Kelly had no idea just how serious her situation was. “Woke up not feeling good, like I had to go to the bathroom, nothing out of the ordinary,” she explained. “Then I had a big burst of pain.”

When Kelly arrived at the hospital, the doctors did an ultrasound out of the standard procedure and discovered that she was in fact very pregnant. WNEM reported that her son Gunnar weighed six pounds and four ounces when he was unexpectedly born.

Both parents were floored by the newest addition to their family, as Kelly hadn’t even shown any signs that she was pregnant or experienced any symptoms. According to WNEM, she didn’t have a bump and was still wearing her usual everyday clothes. Kelly explained that the doctors believed she was unaware of the growing child inside of her, as he was stuck behind her ribs, up against her back.

“I didn’t have any pains,” she said. “I didn’t feel any movements.” The only symptom she noticed was that she didn’t have her monthly period, but Kelly pinned that on how she was getting Depo-Provera shots, an active form of birth control.

According to WebMD, it’s not actually that uncommon for women to not know that they’re pregnant. Some women have mental health problems that keep them from recognizing the signs or symptoms. According to WebMD, this condition is referred to as denied pregnancy, and an estimated one in 400 or 500 women are typically about 20 weeks into their pregnancy before they even realize it. Denied pregnancy can last a while, as one in 2,500 women make it all the way to labor before they realize they are with child, according to WebMD.

In a news file video uploaded to YouTube by CBS Philly, Kelly and her ever-growing family appeared happy and content with their newest addition. The two parents took turns holding the newborn, with the rest of their family standing close by and looking on with smiles on their faces. John held their baby boy wrapped in a blanket and patted his back gently. “I think when God decides to reach down and touch your heart, everything changes,” the father said.

Surprisingly, this wasn’t the first time Kelly experienced a rare pregnancy. According to WNEM, the mother of four gave birth to another son in 2013 at full term, just three weeks after finding out that she was even pregnant.

Despite all of the surprises and rare occurrences that have their way, the Yakich family seems to have welcomed them happily with open arms and has continued to expand their beautiful and loving family.
