Man Rescues Puppies He Found In A Garden But Discovers They Are Actually Fox Cubs

Craig McGettrick was cleaning up trash one day in a garden in England when he found something unusual. From what he saw, he had stumbled upon a litter of small puppies.

They were all alone in out there and their mother didn’t seem to be around. Craig thought for sure that the mother had simply abandoned them, so he decided it was up to him to take responsibility for the animals.

Craig gathered the puppies in a small cardboard box that he had carefully lined with soft towels then drove them to a local animal rescue shelter. Before doing so, he took pictures of the puppies to share on Facebook reports The Dodo.

However, he was shocked to learn that the litter of puppies were not puppies at all. As their pictures began to circulate among friends, family, and strangers, he received surprising news from the National Fox Welfare Authority. Craig had discovered fox cubs!

Craig was advised to take the babies back to where he had taken them from. He hoped that their mother would show up soon to feed the babies, as they were very hungry at that point. Craig did not want to feed them so that they would cry for their mother instead.

Craig knew that he needed to put the cubs back exactly where he had found them. He realized that the mother fox would likely head back to wherever she had left the cubs last. He also figured that the mother would wait until it was dark to avoid human contact.

Luckily, Craig was right. Within an hour, she had come back to get her babies. She took them to a safe place one by one, and by nightfall all of the cubs were reunited with their family once again.

According to The Fox Website, fox cubs are totally dependent on their mother for food, protection, and warmth right after they are born. Fox cubs are born blind and deaf. It takes a few days for their eyes and ears to open up. Some fox breeds have short black fur which can cause them to look like young puppies.

Typically, the mother doesn’t leave the cubs when they are so young. The father hunts for food for the mother while she stays and nurses her vulnerable babies. She stays to not only feed them but to protect them from predators and the weather.
