According to the London Evening Standard, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has agreed his country would be willing to pick up the bill for Markle, Prince Harry and their son Archie when they spend time in the North American nation.

The Prime Minister is reported to have reassured Queen Elizabeth II that the Duke and Duchess and their son will be safe in Canada. The country is expected to cover roughly half of the £1 million annual bill.

As members of the Royal family, Markle and Prince Harry are entitled to tax-funded round-the-clock security both in the UK and abroad, both when on holiday or when carrying out official duties.

Today, following a two-and-a-half-hour summit at the Royal family’s Sandringham home, the Queen released a statement confirming the couple’s move to Canada. Until then, Markle and Prince Harry only stated they would be splitting their time between the UK and North America, without specifying which nation.

The statement, which was released earlier this evening, said the Royal family is “entirely supportive” of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to ‘step back’ as senior royals.

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” the statement reads. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

The family is said to have agreed on a ‘transitional period’ in which the Sussexes will spend time in both Canada and the UK. Additional final decisions are expected to be announced by the palace in the upcoming days.
