Judy Garland's Daughter Lorna Luft Looks Stunning Today

Feb 15, 2022

Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft are American actresses and the daughters of Hollywood legend Judy Garland. The sisters opened up about their mom in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in Jan. 2022 in which they shared memories from growing up. They lost their mom in 1969 when she was 47 to an accidental drug overdose.

While many people are familiar with Garland's oldest daughter Liza, whom she had with her second husband Vincente Minnelli, not as many know about Lorna. Garland had married Sidney Luft in 1952 and that same year they had Lorna. They also had a son named Joey Luft. The couple remained married until 1965.

Both Liza and Lorna have fond memories of their mother, but Garland had a difficult life. She struggled with drug addiction and low self-esteem. There were reports that she acted strangely during interviews, and her mental health was called into question. In spite of all this, Lorna said that her mom resented being deemed a tragic figure. She conceded that her mother's death was a tragedy, but Garland was not a tragic person.

To honor Garland's incredible legacy, the sisters collaborated on an upcoming fragrance called "Judy." The actresses chose the scent based on their mother's favorite flower, roses, and will release the fragrance in June 2022 to celebrate what would have been Garland's 100th birthday.

Now aged 69, Lorna has also had a long career in show business, just like her mother and sister. She's worked across all mediums over the years but has had a particularly strong career in theater. Let's take a look.

Garland's relationship to her daughters was often depicted as strained due to the pressures of Hollywood and the fact that the industry always compared them. This was more prominent for Liza, but Lorna also lived in the shadow of her famous mom. Nevertheless, Liza has spoken of how Garland did her best to protect her as a young girl. She said:

"I remember Mama saying, "Now don't get upset because of the way they may compare you to me because you're an entertainer too." I said, "Oh, I won't." And then she reads something where they compared me to her. She said, "How dare they? You're your own woman. Dammit! Can't they see?" And she'd throw it down in the trash."

While Liza went on to achieve the "EGOT," which includes Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award wins, Lorna's career was more low-key. Her entry into show business began when she appeared on her mom's show, "The Judy Garland Show," at the tender age of 11. She went on to study at New York City's HB Studio before she found her passion on Broadway. She starred in "Promises, Promises" in the '70s and appeared in many other acclaimed shows including "Snoopy! The Musical," "Grease," "Mame," "Little Shop of Horrors," "Gypsy" and more.

Of course, as well as being compared to her mom, Lorna and Liza were also often compared. And while their relationships had ups and down, Lorna put it down to sibling rivalry. She said:

"My sister and I will always find our way back to one another, no matter what comes into being ... Our family's just a little strange because it's under a microscope."

In their interview with Entertainment Tonight, the sisters remembered spending time with their mother and her many celebrity friends. Lorna recalled:

"I know this is going to sound strange, but I've said it so many times, it was our normal. We didn't know they were famous; we didn't know they were different. They were our parents' friends. That was the neighborhood."

The sisters have been through a lot together, and Liza and Lorna have become closer because of it. "Born into what we were born into, we didn't have a choice, but we made a choice to say to one another, it will always be the two of us, and who we decide to invite to the party will be our decision and that's why," Lorna said.

While Garland's lifelong battle with addiction is well known, her daughters don't agree with the idea that their mother was a tragic figure.

"That's the thing that bugs me the most," Liza said. "They would say tragic Judy Garland and I'd say, 'Oh shut up.' It was her humor and her kindness. ... With her family, she was hilarious."

The sisters believe their mother should be remembered for her sense of humor instead of her struggles in life. Lorna said:

"I've always said this ... we've all had tragedies in life, but we're not tragic. And she had tragedies, but she was not tragic, and she didn't pass it on to us. ... Our mom had such an extraordinary sense of humor, and that was her survival guide."
