He Is Sick Of His Popcorn Ceiling, When He Tapes This On His Vacuum? It Works Like Magic

Mar 14, 2016

Popcorn ceilings, also known as cottage cheese ceilings, aren’t everyone’s favorite design. Thanks to the changes in style and the Clean Air Act of 1978, this design quickly faded out and is not found in many of the newer houses; however, if you live in a home that was built between the 1950's and 1980's, you may find that you’re faced with a popcorn ceiling.

Thankfully, popcorn ceilings don’t have to stick around! In fact, thanks to Aaron Rollins, we now have a simple and speedy procedure to remove popcorn ceilings without a lot of out-of-pocket expense. In fact, you probably have all the supplies you will need laying around your home.

Getting rid of the popcorn ceiling is almost as easy as, well, popping popcorn! All you need is a 6-inch spackle knife, a squirt bottle of water, duct tape, and a shop vacuum. Duct tape the knife to the end of your vacuum, and then you're ready to go.

First, you need to spray the ceiling with water. If you don’t want to do the entire room at once, you can do small areas at a time. Give the water a bit of time to soak into the texture, then use the knife to scrape the ceiling while the vacuum sucks up the reside that will fall off.

Using this technique, Aaron Rollins says that he was able to remove his entire popcorn ceiling in one room within ten minutes! You can’t get much easier than that.

Since many popcorn ceilings were made with paint containing white asbestos, you need to use caution when doing any removal work.
