Garth Brooks' Country Smash Hit 'If Tomorrow Never Comes'

Jul 01, 2020

If Tomorrow Never Comes is a song recorded by American country music artist Garth Brooks. Written by Brooks and Kent Blazy, it was released in August 1989 as the second single from his album Garth Brooks and also appears on The HitsThe Limited Series, and Double Live. This was the singer's first number-one single on the US Billboard Country Singles chart and is also sometimes referred to as his signature song since it was named the Favorite Country Single at the American Music Awards in 1991.

Brooks shared the inspiration for his monstrously successful song in an interview:

"There are a lot of great writers in Nashville and Kent Blazy and his wife Sharon, who are wonderful people, had been trying to make a living from Kent’s songwriting. I thought we had something when we completed the song but I didn’t really know it would be a hit until I heard it by chance on the radio in my truck and I knew we had something. There was something in it that moved me and I could feel the tears come to my eyes."

Brooks' song, sung with his powerful voice, serves as a reminder to us all that we have to love and cherish the time that we have with the people that we love, rather than take them for granted. The future is as volatile and unpredictable as a raging sea storm; we should be doing the things that we want to be doing, rather than doing what those around us see fit.

Brooks' lyrics also reveal another question: Are we showing as much love to our romantic partners as possible, or are we holding back because of fear?

As Brook sings about in his song, sometimes we hide our feelings, waiting to reveal them on a perfect, special occasion. The hard truth is, we don't know if that moment we're waiting for will ever arrive, which is why it's so important to speak your mind and your truth whenever you have the opportunity.
