It is often said that you can tell a lot about a person by how he or she treats animals. Those who show kindness and compassion to animals can be counted on to be good friends and neighbors, helping their fellow man whenever the need may arise. A group of fishermen in California recently showed how much they care about animal welfare in a news story that has become a viral sensation.

Brett and Tomilyn were fishing near Morro Bay when they spotted a baby otter who appeared to be in distress. Crying out, the little creature seemed to have been separated from his mother. Brett and Tomilyn quickly contacted their local police department, who responded in full force.

Among those who responded to the emergency were officials from the Marine Mammal Center and Officer Mike Harris of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Animal welfare officials make sure that the otter population of Morro Bay is attended to with the utmost care. Due to irresponsible hunting practices, the otter population in the area nearly disappeared in the 19th Century.

Otters are now among California’s most protected animals, being placed on the endangered species list.

Welfare officials quickly took the baby onto their boat. Locating the mother, they prepared to reunite her with her young one. Fearing that getting too close would scare off the mother, officials stopped the boat about 100 yards away. Carefully holding the baby so he would not be bitten by its sharp teeth, a welfare official gingerly picks up the animal and gently tosses it in the mother’s direction.

After a few tense moments, the mother swims up to her baby, cuddling the small creature. Finally reunited, the mother and baby swim off to the cheers of the onlookers.
