Curious Hawk Inspects TV Weather Camera

Apr 27, 2020

In 2016, a high-flying hawk in Lincoln, Nebraska perched itself atop the 10/11 weather tower and stood right in front of the weather camera. The footage of the curious bird playing around was posted on youtube.

Birds need a rest from their long aerial adventures, and this playful Hawk decided to take a break on ––of all places–– a Lincoln, Nebraska-based weather tower.

The creature’s majestic stature caught the attention of local meteorologists Rusty Dawkins and Sean Viale, who tweet-ed about their feathered friend while also noting that the ground was a long way down: in the footage, the hawk is seen at the break of the horizon line as he comes face to face with area viewers.

The bird’s curiosity got the best of it while standing on the tower. He remains still for just a moment before cocking his head and approaching the camera as if he’s trying to talk to the strange being.

It looks as if to be saying, “Hello? Anybody in there? If you can hear me, the weather is great! It's perfect for flying.”

Though he most plausible theory is that the hawk sees its reflection in the lens and is admiring itself, hence the head-tilting and the repetitive opening-closing of its mouth.

It seems to be very proud of the way it looks, too – as it should be!

The video evoked tons of funny comments, unsurprisingly. Some of the replies include "This is what I look like waiting for the microwave to stop" and "I've seen enough apocalypse movies to know what this means".

We like to think this hawk knew exactly what it was doing. And these golden bloopers are probably why the weather forecast segments on TV hasn't yet been canceled.
