Cop Adopts Doomed Shelter Dog: Four Years Later, They Make Chilling Discovery In Woods

Jun 12, 2018

Officer Matthew Zarrella made a life-saving decision after he heard about a local shelter dog in danger of being euthanized. He heard the dog was very hyper, but that didn't stop him from heading over to the shelter to meet the puppy in question.

One of the volunteers at the local shelter, Patricia Inman, heard the dog was about to reach the end of her stay. She tried and tried to train her in hopes of finding her a forever home. She was able to make some progress, but she hadn't been able to get her ready for adoption in time. She called Officer Matthew Zarrella of the Rhode Island State Police and asked him to come see the puppy.

Luckily for Zarella and the dog later named Ruby, it was love at first sight. He knew she was a handful, but that was indicative of an underlying intelligence that would serve her and her future dad well. Zarella called Officer Daniel O'Neal, who was in search of a good K-9 partner. Zarella gave him the chance to have the partner he wanted.

O'Neal spent the next four months training Ruby intensively. The two of them became very close as he molded her into the K-9 officer she became. Ruby was not only adoptable, she was to become a hero.

Four years after that fateful day, Ruby and O'Neil were called to search the local forest for a teenage boy who'd gone missing. An eager officer, Ruby took to the case with enthusiasm, getting about one-and-a-half miles into the woods before O'Neal says she took off barking like crazy. Ruby found the missing teen!

O'Neal saw the boy was injured and needed immediate medical attention. He sent his coordinates to rescue workers and told Ruby to keep up barking so they would be found faster. Little did they know, both officer and dog were connected to this young man in an unexpected way. Officer O'Neal couldn't believe it when he heard who Ruby had rescued.
