Coach Catches 9-Year-Old Gymnast Midair In The Nick Of Time And Avoids Potentially Disastrous Fall

Oct 20, 2020

The average spectator doesn't see gymnastics as a dangerous activity. After all, the events don't represent harsh contact sports. Perhaps not, but gymnastics remains risky for all participants.

Spinning, jumping, twirling, and tumbling put gymnasts at injury risks. Earlier this year, a 9-year-old girl named Cherrish Remy almost succumbed to a potentially injurious mishap, which took place at a national Gymnastics competition in Nashville. Thankfully, her quick-thinking coach jumped into action. Specifically, he jumped into the fray to help the young girl's jumping mishap. A video of the impressive catch has since made its rounds on the internet, with many impressed by the coach.

The young girl, Cherrish Remy, was competing in a national Gymnastics competition in  Tennessee. The event involved taking part in a vault jump, something she likely did many times before. The now-viral video captured her jump attempt, which shows how being slightly off could lead to a potential disaster.

Cherrish is shown running across a matted path before she hits the board while also performing a springing summersault-type move. She flies into the air and attempts to land on several mats piled on top of one another.

Cherrish's feet didn't touch the surface as she intended and, because never gained solid footing, she slipped. Falling feet first from the height could lead to an injury. What makes this particular slip more frightening is Cherrish appeared unable to land correctly based on how she slipped.

Audible gasps accompany the video, as everyone knew the slip was a serious one. Cherrish's mom, who was filming at the time, sounds particularly worried.

Incredibly, Cherrish's coach, Chad Buczek, was nearby, and he jumped into the frame to catch her. Chad caught her long before she neared the ground, so no injury occurred. The coach deserves much credit for his quick thinking and actions.

The video made its way to the news, likely raising eyebrows among those who did associate gymnastics with danger. Speaking to the Inside Edition, however, Cherrish does not seem deterred by the mishap and is determined to keep on working towards becoming just like her role model, Simone Biles.

We're glad coach Buczek was there to catch Cherrish just in time! Have your kids ever had any close calls while doing sports or gymnastics? Let us know in the comments, and make sure you pass this along to your friends and family!
