Britney Spears' Mother Says Father Jamie Is 'Incapable Of Putting My Daughter's Interests Ahead of His Own'

Jul 29, 2021

As the world continues to learn more about Britney Spears' conservatorship, wherein her father Jamie Spears has essentially managed her life and finances for more than 13 years, more news about the case continues to come in. The full extent of Britney's situation began to come to light earlier this year after the release of the documentary "Framing Britney Spears" in February 2021 amid the ongoing "Free Britney" movement, which calls into question the continued need for her legal conservatorship.

Recent updates have occurred this month after a judge ruled that Britney can choose her own lawyer in the fight to end her conservatorship — a freedom that was only just now allowed to her for the first time in 13 years. This news came as a welcome change for the singer, who had been dealt with a blow after a judge denied her request to end her controversial conservatorship even after her explosive testimony in June.

The attorney Britney appointed, Mathew Rosengart, then made a new statement in which he thanked Britney's fans all over the world before announcing that he and his team would be moving very quickly to remove Jamie as conservator.

Now, Britney's mother, Lynne Spears, has spoken up on behalf of her daughter, as she calls out her ex-husband for his treatment of Britney. Her statement was part of a recent court filing that doesn't hold back in her support of her daughter and Britney's wishes regarding the conservatorship. She reveals damning allegations against Jamie and supports who Britney wishes to replace him as conservator.

In the court documents, which were obtained by ET, Lynne Spears shares her support of Britney Spears' statements against her father Jamie Spears. Lynne explains that she's been a participant in the conservatorship since May 2019, after becoming an interested party "during what I will term a 'time of crisis' that began at the end of 2018 and continued into 2019."

She states that she became involved since she wanted to make sure everything in Britney's life was handled in her daughter's best interests, before going on to state, "Which I did not believe at the time (and I still do not today) to be the case." She recounts that Jamie hired a "sports enhancement doctor" during the "time of crisis" who was actually a psychiatrist that was prescribing Britney medicine that she "and many others thought to be entirely inappropriate," while Britney herself didn't want to take the medicine. She adds:

"I witnessed my daughter be compelled by that doctor, with the knowledge and encouragement of Mr. Spears, to enter a health facility that she did not want to enter, where she was threatened with punishment if she did not stay for medical treatment that she did not want to endure."

Lynne alleges that Jamie has "exercised absolutely microscopic control over the conservatee and her actions" and has even tasked people working closely with Britney, such as security detail and medical aides, to report to him on "every detail of every action that takes place in the conservatee's home and her life." She denounced this as "exhausting and terrifying ... like living in custody."

Britney's mom stated that the relationship between Britney and Jamie had "dwindled to nothing but fear and hatred," and that it was down to her ex-husband's behavior. Specifically, one major event that "destroyed whatever was left of a relationship between them" was a "physical altercation between Mr. Spears and the conservatee's minor children." Taking place on Aug. 24, 2019, the alleged incident even resulted in Britney's sons being granted a temporary restraining order from their grandfather.

The statement from Lynne states that for her it's "clear" that Jamie "is incapable of putting my daughter's interests ahead of his own on both a professional and a personal level and that his being and remaining a conservator of my daughter's estate is not in the best interests of my daughter."

Lynne's statement came alongside documents that requested certified public accountant Jason Rubin to become the conservator of Britney's estate. The documents state:

"Ms. Spears respectfully submits that the Court should appoint her nominee; in that, it is an objectively intelligent preference to nominate a highly qualified, professional fiduciary in this circumstance."

It goes on to add that since Britney "has sufficient capacity to choose her own legal counsel, she likewise has sufficient capacity to make this nomination." Reiterating Britney's testimony from June, the documents state that her relationship with her father is so "fractured" that they don't "speak, and any interaction with her father is unwelcomed and needlessly stressful." It continues:

"The venomous nature of this relationship makes Mr. Spears’s prompt removal ... inexorable, as it is detrimental to the well-being of the very person the conservatorship is supposed to protect. ... Far from benefiting Ms. Spears, as she herself has testified, it impairs Ms. Spears’s mental health, her well-being, and her ability to pursue and continue with her extraordinary career."
