Rainé Riggs has passed away on October 5 after a short battle with neuroendocrine cancer. She was only diagnosed a few days earlier, after being ill for three weeks.

Rainé was the wife of Levi Sanders, senator Bernie Sander’s son. The Sanders family is coping with the tragic passing as well as Bernie’s heart attack, which occurred the same week, according to NBC.

Rainé was an accomplished neuropsychologist who used her skills to help the homeless, especially veterans, at her own practice in Vermont.

She also volunteered in a pediatric hospice, and had volunteered her counseling skills for those at ground zero after 9/11. Her volunteerism was important to her and she met her husband Levi volunteering at an emergency food shelter.

The couple had three children, Sunnee, Ryleigh, and Grayson. She led a very accomplished and selfless life but her obituary reads that “her crowning achievement in life was the day she became a mother.” It continues on with touching remarks from her husband:

“Rainè Riggs, we will miss you everyday until the day we see your beautiful smile.... I know you will be waiting for us.”

Condolences can be sent via her obituary website Rest in peace to Rainé Riggs, and thoughts go to the Sanders family.
