Nick Pierzchalski stayed busy in the Army National Guard transporting wounded soldiers for treatment. While this was more than a job for Nick as he was happy to be able to save his fellow soldiers, it was sometimes difficult emotionally and affected his morale considerably.
Fortunately for Nick, comfort came from an unexpected place. While stationed in Iraq, a stray dog found his way to Nick and immediately became his friend. The good girl had no other family or friends in the war zone. He and his fellow soldiers were excited about their companion and did whatever they could to provide the dog, who they named Airys, the best home they could given the situation.
While the good girl may have been well taken care of by those at the base, she did just as good job taking care of them. He took it upon himself to build Airys her own kennel in the hangar on the base. For Nick, Airys was a beacon of hope when many had lost it all. They were an inseparable duo!

Nick was devastated about having to leave his pup friend behind in Iraq when it was time for him to return to Florida. He told himself that he would somehow get her back and keep her safe in the United States no matter what he had to do. Nick was finally able to bring his good friend through SPCA International and Operation Baghdad Pups reports Fox News. Nick and the organizations worked hard to bring Airys back to the United States and to a comfortable life of safety where the pair would be able to spend their lives together.
The local Fox station followed the reunion and recorded everything that unfolded in live television. It had been a while since the pair had seen each other and Nick was nervous that she wouldn't remember him. Airys was excited to be in a new place as she exited the plane in her dog carrier while Nick waited nervously.
As she left her cage, she immediately went to Nick, and small whines of happiness could be heard as the friends were able to be with each other for the first time in months.
What was captured that day was nothing short of beautiful. It's a true story of a hero's perseverance and love for his buddy that got him through war. What would you do to be reunited with an old friend like Airys?
