12 Weird Bodily Sounds And What Your Body Is Trying To Tell You

Apr 11, 2018

Just like a house, the older our bodies get, the more strange sounds come out of them. Sometimes they can just be "settling noises," and other times your body is trying to tell you something important.

Read on to learn what these 12 strange sounds mean.

1. Joint Pops

We've all stood up and heard very audible pops in our joints as they stretch, and this is perfectly fine. This happens more as we get older. If you don't experience any pain, there is no cause for concern. A lubricating liquid called Synovial fluid protects our joints, and sometimes air bubbles pop during redistribution.

2. Stomach Rumbles

Stomach grumbles don't always mean we're hungry. This noise actually happens when our stomachs push digestive fluid further down the tract, and this can trigger a hunger pang. However, if you hear these growls while you're constipated or have cramps, you could have a more serious problem.

3. "Windy" Ears

Have you ever been told that you can hear the ocean when you hold something up to your ear? When you lay down, you may also hear a whooshing sound because your blood is rushing to your head. If you hear this while you're upright, you may have allergies or an ear infection.

4. Unusual Sleeping Sounds

If you're snorting or gasping in your sleep, you probably have sleep apnea and should see a doctor. This is especially a concern if you wake up feeling tired, even after a long sleep.

5. Hiccups

Everyone suffers from hiccups and has their own unique cure for them. Hiccups are caused by a spasm in your diaphragm, and some common cures include holding your breath or swallowing some honey.

6. Whistling

Sometimes you may hear a faint whistling if you have a stray booger in your nose, but it could mean something more serious like allergies or a sinus infection. If you notice this sound after a head injury, definitely seek medical attention.

7. Ringing Ears

This is professionally named tinnitus and it occurs frequently in elderly people. Although it's usually not serious, this phenomenon is caused by damage to a small organ in your ear called the cochlea. If you also experience dizziness or nausea, you should see a doctor.

8. Jaw Popping

Our jaws are able to open thanks to the hinge called the temporomandibular joint. Sometimes our jaw can get slightly out of alignment and, when you hear this pop, your jaw is simply resetting itself.

9. Queef

A queef sounds like a fart when a woman experiences vaginal wind. During intercourse, certain positions can force air inside. Eventually, the air will be pushed out, resulting in the not-so-attractive sound. This happens to every woman and it's nothing to be ashamed of!

10. Throat Gurgles

If you eat too fast, drink soda, or chew gum, you may have experienced a strange gurgling sound in your throat after opening your mouth. As long as you don't struggle to swallow, this sound is totally normal.

11. Creaky Joints

This is different from popping joints. The older we get, the less cartilage we have to support our bodies, which results in a creaking sound. If this is persistent, see a doctor because you may suffer from osteoarthritis.

12. "Whining" Coughs

If you have a wheezy, painful cough, you may either have asthma or whooping cough.
