10 Easy DIY Weed Killers That Are Cheap And Effective

May 07, 2018

Nobody wants to spend their free time picking weeds! Maintaining your lawn is a tricky and frustrating task. Companies manufacture expensive weed-killers because they know people want a quick-fix to their problem. However, there are better ways you can save your time and money. The best part is you probably have at least one of these ingredients in your house already!

Lemon Juice And Citric Acid

Here's another effective spray bottle recipe. Combine citric acid (which can be bought at the store), 4 ounces of lemon juice, and one tablespoon of white or apple cider vinegar. Give it a shake and go at it!

Hot Water

Boiling water will effectively kill any plant it touches, so use this to your advantage and be cautious. To save some time, add salt to the water. Only use this method on small patches instead of your entire lawn.

Dish Soap

You can make your own spray bottle of weed-killer! Mix a squirt of dish soap, 1/4 of a cup of salt, and fill the rest with vinegar. Give it a good shake and spray down all of your weeds.

Salt

Try using your extra salt on the sides of your driveway to prevent or kill weeds. Salt dehydrates plants just like it dehydrates us! By dousing weeds in salt, you'll pull all of the water out of them.

Vinegar

Water has a neutral pH, so spraying something acidic like vinegar on weeds can kill them in no time. Just be aware that using too much vinegar on your lawn can negatively affect the pH of your soil, which can hurt your other plants.

Newspapers

This method is time-consuming but effective. Cut of your weeds' water and sun supply by packing newspapers on top of them. Bury the newspapers in some mulch or rocks so they won't fly away!

Cayenne

Cayenne is best enjoyed as a sprinkle in your dish. Nothing can withstand a whole spoonful of it! If you combine some cayenne with dish soap and water, you can kill any weeds you spray.

Mulch

Mulch is also a great way to cut off sunlight and water from your weeds. Plus, it's much more decorative than newspapers. For best results, cover with 3 inches of mulch.

Plants

Replace the weeds with flowers of your choice. They will not only use all the sources available and leave nothing behind for weeds but also look beautiful.

Lawn Mower

You can slowly kill weeds by cutting them each week with the lawnmower. Most mowers come with settings that can maintain grass length but chop down weeds. Or, if you don't mind getting dirty, simply pull the weeds out by the root so they won't grow back.

Are you going to try one of these methods? Make sure your friends and family know how to keep their lawns tidy this summer!
