2. Mom self-care

Especially in the first 30 days after giving birth, moms need to remember to care for themselves and be gentle with their bodies. Some suggestions include sleeping when baby sleeps to ensure you are getting enough rest, and to make sure you are eating a healthy diet especially if you are breastfeeding.

3. Swaddling

Newborn babies are used to a secure and cozy environment, and swaddling is one way to mimic these feelings. The technique is a great way to calm and soothe a crying baby.

First, your sheet should be folded like a diamond. Next, fold the top corner down and place your baby on the sheet. One side of the blanket should then be wrapped across your child's chest, with the corner tucked underneath their arm. Next, the bottom corner of the blanket should be folded over baby's feet and tucked behind the shoulders. The last side of the blanket can then be folded over the chest and tucked under your baby.

4. How to breastfeed

If you choose to breastfeed your child, it is important to establish good techniques in the first few days of life as milk is the only source of food and nutrition for your baby.

It is highly suggested that new mothers ask as many questions as they can in these first few days as many issues can come up, such as a poor latch, low supply, and infection.

There are several traditional holds that work well for breastfeeding and you should choose the one that works best for you and your baby. For those that have a baby who tends to fall asleep at the breast, tickling baby's feet can help to keep baby awake long enough to fill their stomach.

5. How to burp a baby and administer CPR

You can also try to burp your baby while laying on your lap. With your baby laying face down on your legs, use one hand to support their chin and jaw while you rub or pat their back.

Burping a baby will keep them comfortable which will then aid in eating and sleeping. In order to burp your baby, simply hold them up to your chest so that their chin is on your shoulder. While using one hand to hold their head and shoulders, take your other hand and rub or pat their back.

If you think your baby is choking lay the baby on your lap the same way you would to burp them. Then give five chest thrusts with two fingers, followed with back blows until you hear coughing.

6. Massage

Massage helps newborns strengthen their bones and muscles. Simply lay your baby on a blanket. Starting with the legs, massage your baby with a vegetable-based oil. Next massage the arms, chest, and finish with the back.

One rule to follow is to not massage your baby after feeding.

7. Bathing a baby

For the first week, your newborn will only require a sponge bath. It is suggested that parents wait until the umbilical cord has fallen off before giving a proper bath in an infant tub.

Infants do not require bathing every day. In addition, remember to check the water temperature before your baby touches the water, and always stay with your baby when around water.

8. Helping baby fall asleep

It is important to help babies understand the natural pattern of light after they come out of the warm and cozy womb. One way to do this is to keep the room your baby is in lit during the day and darkened at night so that your baby will begin to understand the difference between day and night.

In addition, kissing or touching your sleeping baby could send them signals that it is time to wake up and play, so as tempting as this may be, try to refrain as much as possible.

9. Changing diapers

While the umbilical cord is still attached, parents should take caution and fold the diaper down under the cord so it does not touch.

Other helpful tips include wiping your child from front to back. This is especially important for girls, as they could get an infection. Your child should then be patted dry before a new diaper is put on.

In case of a rash, make sure to change diapers more frequently so as not to irritate it more. Rash cream should be kept on hand so that a small rash does not become a larger problem.

10. Bonding with your newborn

Skin-to-skin touch is suggested from the moment your baby is born. You can also look directly into your baby's eyes and talk to them or sing to them and smile.
