No, I am not kidding about this! There are legitimate reasons (besides just lazing around on the couch on a Sunday) why we should let the leaves pile up in the garden without feeling guilty about it.

The National Wildlife Federation is asking us to put the rake down for the sake of our planet. According to a recently published post leaving leaves on the ground in your backyard has a lot of benefit to the wildlife and your garden. The NWF lists three important reasons why raking leaves can actually be harmful to the environment and the creatures living in your garden.

Here are three reasons not to rake those leaves in your garden.

1. Raking Affects Many Species That Consider Leaves Their Home

Cute chipmunks, box turtles, and other not so cute but important species such as insects are earthworms live among those leaves. "The leaf layer is its own ecosystem," says NWF. "Many wildlife species live in or rely on the leaf layer to find food and other habitat." And by raking leaves we destroying the natural habitat of these creatures. So, don't do it!

2. Fallen Leaves Is Just What Your Garden Needs.

Leaves form a natural mulch that helps suppress weeds and at the same time acts as a fertilizer for the soil. Which means that you can save money on mulch and fertilizer because you can make your own in your garden! So, let your garden rest this fall!

3. Raking Leaves Means Fewer Butterflies. And Less Food For The Birds

Fallen leaves are a great spot for butterflies and moths to stay warm during the winter season. Raking leaves will kill the poor creatures and it will affect the birds food chain. So, please put that rake down! Stop wasting time raking those leaves and instead us the time to enjoy the gorgeous fall weather.
